The empty dresses sway in the breeze.
Row by row we walk among them,
Wondering who they were.
Sisters who painted their nails cherry red
Before heading off to the maquiladoras
To make computer chips and underwear.
Grandmothers and young girls.
Were their last cries met only with cruel laughter?
These women of Juarez,
Murdered and discarded
Like Job’s first daughters.
Where is the almighty
When the sacred is profaned?
The path to the truth is a dark one.
No sane person travels it
Just to see.
The wind picks up now
Lifting the dresses
Away from their crosses,
Slightly toward the sky.
Guadalupe opens her arms
Bathing them in light.
She calls each one by name.
“Aquí no corres ningún peligro.”
You’ll be safe here, now.
